Giant Panda ![]()
An An, a male and Jia Jia, a female. The giant panda is one of the
world's most endangered species. Native only to China, just 1,000 are believed
to survive in the wild. Poaching and dwindling habitat have devastated the
bear-like black and white animals, which are at a disadvantage because they have
selective eating habits and an extremely short mating season. Giant pandas spend
much of their time munching on bamboo, consuming up to 40 pounds (18 kg) per
day! Pandas are difficult to breed in captivity and, because of the decline in
their natural habitat, only about 1,000 pandas are believed to be left in the
wild.
